Case Description
I have had consultations with two different dentists; I have a 5 tooth bridge/lower left (two of the adult teeth/molars never came in) Apparently the bridge was compromised when a root canal was done through the bridge on the first anchoring tooth; this is where it is now loose, although the other end of the bridge still feels secure. The last dentist I saw said that the first anchoring tooth, the one with the root canal is cracked and that the second anchoring tooth's health is also questionable, but that he wouldn't know for sure until he took the bridge off. Worse case scenario would be that I would loose the first anchoring tooth which would I assume affect the type of replacement bridge. Implants may be a possibility. I was quoted $12K for a new bridge and restoration of the three remaining teeth beneath the bridge. The dentist's financial credit plans would not approve me for credit. This could be attributed to the catastrophic events of the past two years since my husband's ALS diagnosis and his death last October. Although the process of grief is an extremely difficult experience I have managed to fulfill my obligations at the two positions I currently hold, so that I do have a good income and could pay for the work. I am absolutely overwhelmed and would very much appreciate any suggestions as to how I could get this dental work done in a timely manner by someone who is highly competent, capable and able to finance the work. I would consider a dentist in Arizona, New Mexico or California. Thank you.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

You may have another option. You might be able to salvage the existing bridge. Dentists do not like to recommend this option because they don't make as much money. If the bridge can be removed intact (using the Reynold's technique), then the decay can be removed or the cracked tooth can be evaluated. The teeth can be repaired and retro-fitted back to match up with the existing bridge. Then the bridge can be recemented.

Your dentist will say it can't be done, or that trying to remove the bridge intact will crack the teeth. But if done carefully, the bridge can be saved with a fairly high degree of reliability. The cracked tooth may be a problem, and need to be extracted. If so, then that one unit can be cut from the bridge, and the remaining bridge can be recemented (provided the remaining teeth will give good support); then an implant can be placed into the area where the tooth was extracted.

My point being: there are always alternatives, some good, some not so good. But, the dentist has an obligation to discuss all options with you, so the you can make the best decision for yourself.

Good luck
